Abobe InDesignI created this poster to promote the film ‘Lost in Translation’ directed by Sophia Coppola. Prior to creating the poster, I watched the film whilst taking note of colour palettes. Most scenes in the film are underexposed and cool, consisting of dark shades of blue, pink and green; I wanted to reflect this in my final poster.
My main objective when designing this poster was to encapsulate the feelings of isolation and incrougency that comes with relocating to a new country; sentiments evoked throughout the film. I achieved this by using type as emotively. and sympathetically, to the film as possible.
Design
Initial sketches
These are my initial 10 sketches. I received feedback on all 10 of them from my classmates and tutors during class. Once I received feedback on them it allowed me to choose three to refine, and ultimatley digitally recreate them. My primary intention when sketching was to capture the themes of the film emotively through the type.

Final poster creation
This is my final poster. I create the billing block located at the bottom of my poster using the typeface‘’Steel Tongs’ to give my poster a more professional feel. I chose to use the typeface Akzidenz Grotesk Roman Bold for the rest of the poster as my tutor pointed out that the arrangement of the lettering present inside of my poster was reminiscent of Swiss typography. I therefore chose to use a typeface that was commonly used by Swiss typographers, being Akzidenz Grotesk.
I also chose to use the typeface Akzidenz Grotesk as it is very bold. Boldness was a very important factor in my poster design as I knew that I wasn’t going to incorporate any image, so the typeface had to work on its own, especially since I knew that I was going to be setting each letter of type individually on its own line (after the first two words of the film title).
After my final feedback session my tutor strongly encouraged me to make the information in my poster (billing block, actors and director names, etc.) white. My tutor also suggested that I move the names of the two main actors in the film closer together. I acted upon this feedback by making the suggested adjustments..
